What is Intermittent Fasting?

Fasting has a long history in many cultures around the world. Some cultures use fasting for spiritual or religious purposes. Periods of fasting were part of our evolution as hunter-gatherers. Long before we went to the supermarket for our food, our ancestors were accustomed to going extended periods without eating & our bodies adapted to fasting. Recently, research on fasting has shown there are many health benefits to Fasting Intermittently.

Studies show the potential of fasting to reduce oxidative damage and inflammation, improve energy metabolism and increase cellular protection.

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a an umbrella term for eating patterns that cycle between periods of eating and not eating (fasting). There are many different ways to practice Intermittent Fasting, including going 12 hours from dinner at night until breakfast the next morning, fasting for 16 hours, then having an 8 hours "eating window" or a version of 5:2, where you eat normally 5 days per week, then have 2 fasting days where you have a calorie restriction of 500-600 calories. This makes it a very flexible practice that you can alter to suit your individual lifestyle & commitments. Be assured that any fasting is going to have health benefits.

Many people first explore intermittent fasting for weight loss, although its benefits extend far beyond maintaining a healthy weight.

Fasting triggers autophagy, which is your body's repair crew. It breaks down damaged cells, dead cells & plaques which are causes of Alzheimers and M.S, while allowing healthy new cells to grow.

Intermittent Fasting is shown to reduce systemic inflammation. Inflammation is the cause of most chronic illness, including autoimmune conditions.

Research has shown intermittent fasting to improve Immune balance & modulate the body's stress response.

Intermittent Fasting causes the body in go into ketosis, where you are burning stored fat instead of glucose. This supports weight loss and increased energy and has also been used to support epilepsy patients.
